WHAT IS THE TEXAS MISSION COUNCIL (TMC)?

The Texas Mission Council of the Texas Catholic Conference is an organization that is dedicated to support and promote the mission activities of the Church both at home and abroad. Membership is open, not only to Church officials, but to all who support the missionary work of the Church.

The Texas Mission Council will celebrate its 2006 annual mission conference in Fort Worth Texas on 27-29th of January, 2006. In keeping with our policy of rotating the annual conference to different dioceses in Texas, we will celebrate in the Dallas/Fort Worth area in 2006 so that we may bring knowledge of the missionary activities in Texas, both at home and abroad, to the people in the northern part of our state.

Since a basic knowledge and understanding of the Mission of the Church is essential to fulfill the commitment of our Baptismal Vows, this conference is directed towards a learning and sharing experience based on our Church’s 21st Century understanding of its Mission in the modern world.

In order to facilitate this wonderful experience, we have contracted Fr. Roger P. Schroeder, SVD, to be our keynote speaker and director of our dialogue sessions. Fr. Schroeder is a professor of Mission Theology at the Catholic Theological Union and co-author of the American Society of Missiology’s most recent publication on mission in the world today, entitled: “Constants in Context”-“A Theology of Mission for Today”.
Fr Schroeder’s introduction to the book contains this message.

“The Church’s foundation and continued existence are not to provide refuge from a sinful world or to provide a warm and supportive community for lonely souls, or even less to be a plank of salvation on a tempestuous sea that threatensdamnation. The point of the Church rather, is to point beyond itself, to be a

community that preaches, serves and witnesses to the Reign of God. Only the Kingdom is absolute, everything else is relative.”

The conference will also include an in-depth look at the mission projects of the Fort Worth Diocese. Begun by the charismatic, now deceased Bishop Delaney, and continuing under the leadership of his successor, Bishop Vann, new and interesting ideas for mission projects in other Texas dioceses are an important goal of the conference through mutual sharing.

All who love the work of the missions are invited to come and both learn and share their ideas, as we all work for the promotion of the Reign of God on earth.
